Life at Lakesong puts you in a sweet spot. You’re close enough to reach lakes, golf courses, historic town squares, and big-city entertainment in under 40 minutes, but far enough out to come home to open space and quiet trails. When Friday afternoon rolls around, the hardest part is choosing where to go. Here are eight ideas to get your weekends started.

1. Joe Pool Lake. Head north on SH 360 and you’re at the water in about 20 minutes. Joe Pool Lake covers more than 7,000 acres, and Lynn Creek Park at 5610 Lake Ridge Parkway has boat ramps, a swim beach, and picnic sites. The marina next door rents boats and jet skis, and lakeside restaurants on the same shore make it easy to stay through dinner.

2. Golf. Two public courses sit within 20 minutes of Lakesong. Tangle Ridge Golf Course, near the south end of Joe Pool Lake, is an 18-hole, par 72 layout owned by the City of Grand Prairie. It has rolling fairways, a driving range, and a clubhouse grill for after the round. To the northwest, Mansfield National Golf Club at 3750 National Parkway spreads across 225 wooded acres and plays 6,850 yards from the back tees and 5,263 from the forward tees. Its fifth hole, a 233-yard par 3, is known as one of the toughest in North Texas. Tee times can be booked online.

3. Cedar Hill State Park. Cedar Hill State Park is one of the few state parks inside a major metro area. It sits on the east shore of Joe Pool Lake at 1570 FM 1382. You’ll find hiking and mountain bike trails, a swimming beach, fishing piers, campsites, and the Penn Farm Agricultural History Center, a preserved 19th-century farmstead. Day entry is $7 for adults, and kids 12 and under get in free. Busy weekends can sell out, so reserve a day pass ahead of time.

4. Downtown Midlothian. Just 10 minutes from Lakesong, historic downtown Midlothian has a relaxed, small-town feel. The blocks around Main Street and Heritage Park are home to locally owned restaurants, coffee shops, boutiques, and a seasonal market. The City of Midlothian also hosts events downtown through the fall and holiday season.

5. Waxahachie Square. About 20 minutes southeast, the square is built around the 1897 Ellis County Courthouse, one of the most photographed courthouses in Texas. Antique shops, restaurants, a restored theater, and a downtown winery fill the surrounding blocks. Check the Waxahachie Convention and Visitors Bureau for dates on the Scarborough Renaissance Festival in the spring and the Texas Country Reporter Festival in the fall.

6. EpicCentral in Grand Prairie. About 20 minutes from Lakesong, EpicCentral is a 172-acre entertainment district at 2961 State Highway 161. Epic Waters indoor waterpark, Bolder Adventure Park, Andretti Indoor Karting, and the free PlayGrand Adventures playground surrounds a chain of lakes lined with waterfront restaurants. Stay into the evening for Illuvia, a water and light show over the lake.

7. Arlington Entertainment District. About 25 minutes north on SH 360, Arlington puts AT&T Stadium, Globe Life Field, Six Flags Over Texas, and Texas Live! close together. Catch a Cowboys or Rangers game or spend the day on the coasters, then finish with dinner and live music at Texas Live!

8. Downtown Dallas. US 67 runs from Midlothian straight into Dallas, about 35 minutes from Lakesong. Klyde Warren Park is a five-acre deck park built over the Woodall Rodgers Freeway, with a wide lawn, food trucks, a dog run, and free weekend programming that ranges from morning yoga to concerts and outdoor movies.
